Special Projects: Sprague Pond

Icy cold and stocked with trout, Sprague Pond is an anomaly, a 10-acre pristine jewel nestled on a wooded hillside about a quarter mile west of Route 209 near the center of Phippsburg.

The rocky shores allow no significant inlet or outlet. Informal surveys reveal a depth of at least 30 feet. Fed only by cold springs, surrounded by a mature forest of giant pines, spruce and hemlock, and frequented by bald eagles, great blue heron and a couple of osprey, the totally undeveloped Sprague Pond easily qualifies as Phippsburg's own "Walden".

Protecting this scenic gem has been a goal of the Phippsburg Land Trust for more than a decade. We now are asking for your help as we continue that effort.

In 2004, the Land Trust purchased some land, a pathway to the pond, and a small parking area from Gail and Truman Roberts. We are now pursuing the possible aquisition of the remaining Sprague Pond Properties.

If you would like to learn more how you can help with this imporant project, please contact us. You can also visit Sprague Pond during one of our Guided Walks.
