Guided Walks 2011
Our walks are leisurely and educational in tone. We invite you to enjoy these special outings without charge. As the Phippsburg Land Trust is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization, we welcome all to become members.
What to Bring:
We suggest long pants, long sleeves and sturdy shoes with socks. Bring a sweater, raingear and hat if weather suggests. Insect repellant is a must. Some walkers like to bring water. Walks go rain or shine (except in downpours).
"Clamming 101" Introduction to Clamming with Dean Doyle

Learn from a pro the tips and tricks to finding a peck of clams for your family event. Fun for kids and adults! Wear waterproof footwear; all other equipment provided. Event is free; if you wish to dig for clams as recreational shellfish license is required for those 10 and over. Licenses are available at the Phippsburg town office. 10am - 1pm, meet at Phippsburg Town Office to carpool to open flat.

MOUNTAIN LAUREL MAGIC
Bijhouwer Forest Preserve

Tour this well-maintained preserve with naturalist Levi, who will guide you past seasonal waterfalls, huge cliffs, streams and, of course, the highlight of the walk: one of Maines largest stands of mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia), which should be in full bloom!
This date may have to be changed based on the date of the bloom - check back here often!
Meet at the parking lot at the Phippsburg Town Hall, Rte, 209, to carpool to the preserve, which has limited parking. The walk to the mountain laurel is fairly easy; the full loop trail of the Bijhouwer Forest is a moderate walk, with some ups and downs. 9:30am, meet at Phippsburg Town Office to carpool to preserve.

A NEW HIDDEN TREASURE IN PHIPPSBURG
Wilbur Preserve at Cox's Head

Walk with the Land Trust on the short but steep trail to the summit of Cox's Head, where Revolutionary War soldiers stood lookout duty against the English. This historic site is its the Land Trust's newest preserve, donated by the Rankin family in the winter of 2010. 10am, meet at Phippsburg Town Office to carpool.

THE POND and THE BASIN, a Picnic and some history.

We will walk from the Land Trust's Sprague Pond Preserve to Burnt Ledge, a height of land in the Nature Conservancy's Basin Preserve. We'll stop there for a Picnic lunch, and then return to Sprague Pond along the Nature Conservancy's Loop trail through the Basin Preserve.
Water repellent footwear; or footwear that can get wet at least, is strongly encouraged. This is the better part of a three and a half mile total trip, with several changes in elevation and some wet areas that will need traversing. Those wanting as shorter trip will have several options from Burnt Ledge. Pack your favorite picnic lunch and bring an extra water bottle. Meet at the Town Office at 10am to carpool to the site.

THE DINOSAUR ROCK Picnic: A walk through the Town Forest.
Ridgewell Preserve and Phippsburg Town Forest

Explore the Pitch Pine forest and the massive Dinosaur Rock maze at the summit of this ridge near the Phippsburg Land Trust's Ridgewell Preserve. If the day is clear we may be able to see Seguin Island Light as well. This walk is moderately strenuous, with quite a bit of up and down. Meet at the parking lot at Bates College Shortridge Center (2nd Left hand driveway after Rt. 209 makes the left onto and becomes the Popham Rd.)

I CAN SEE FOR MILES AND MILES and MILES - Geology Walk
Wilbur Preserve at Cox's Head

How were these granite-knobbed lookouts formed? What geologic forces are at play in creating hilltop Ponds and springs? Peter will tell us whats behind the rock formation of Cox's Head, and perhaps a little about the greater geologic forces that create Atkin's Bay, Sabino Head and the other features visible from the summit of Cox's Head. Meet at the Phippsburg Town Hall parking lot on Route 209 to carpool to Wilbur Preserve, which has limited parking. The walk to the summit is about 100 feet and is fairly easy.

HAWK WATCH 2011

Popham Beach State Park

Join Larry for a view of the world of raptors, swooping by Popham and Small Point on their annual migration route. The 2009 Hawk Watchers saw both Peregrine Falcons and Eagles.
Please preregister with Larry, and he will let you know which weekend we will be meeting at the Popham Beach State Park parking lot at 9 am. Bring binoculars if you have them and a lunch if you wish; flight patterns can vary depending on the weather patterns, and peak viewing times can be unpredictable.

Join the Phippsburg Sportsmen's Club and the Phippsburg Land Trust in this joint event. The afternoon will include a talk but David L. Spahr, the "Mushroom Maineiac." David will offer practical advice from over 3 decades of the collection and consumption of wild mushrooms from our local forests; following his presentation, David will lead a walk to look for local mushrooms and apply his knowledge of whats safe and absolutely not safe to consume.

The Phippsburg Sportsmans Club is located one and a quarter miles south of the Winnegance causeway on Rte 209.
The building is on the left as you go south. Parking is in front of the building.
